GET BEHIND NEW SIGNINGS
By David Crane, Cambridge Evening News ~ Wednesday 30th January 2008
Mildenhall are appealing to their supporters to give their new signings time to bed in after confirming their sixth winter capture as New Zealand Under-21 champion Grant Tregoning. The 19 year-old will line up at no. 2 but his place is still subject to a work permit. With Danes Jan Graversen and Casper Wortmann, as well as the Kiwi, it gives the Fen Tigers three riders in their top five without any previous British League experience, a matter that has caused some concern for fans.

But team manager Laurence Rogers stressed: “I ask our supporters to give these lads a chance to impress before they knock them. We could have signed three world stars in the making for Mildenhall. Grant comes on the esteemed recommendation of six times world champion Ivan Mauger and is a very promising young lad with bags of potential. The other alternative was to spend out on loan fees and we have talked to a great number of riders over the past few months and due to various reasons, they didn’t fit the bill. Glasgow and Stoke, as well as Berwick and Newport to an extent, have gone down the same route which is building for the long term benefit of the club.”

Tregoning has won his homeland Under 21 crown twice, an honour also claimed a couple of years ago by ex-Mildenhall favourite Andrew Bargh, and recently finished third in the South Island Solo Championship, which was won by Rye House-bound Andrew Aldridge.

With only their top spot left to fill, Rogers is keen to thrash out terms and a deal with Australian Craig Watson who was due to land back into the UK today. Watson’s acquisition, alongside German International Robbie Kessler, would give the Tigers a firm backbone to their side for the 2008 Premier League season which starts in less than six weeks.

Mildenhall have again postponed their planned training school for Saturday due to unavailability of the West Row stadium, which has recently gone through a management restructure. The next session is February 16.

FEN TIGERS NEW SIGNING SECRET REVEALED
By Mildenhall Speedway ~ Sunday 27th January 2008

With five riders already signed up for the 2008 campaign the Mildenhall Fen Tigers secret signing from Down Under was revealed in a Daily paper before the club could announce it themselves!! They had kept his identity under wraps until all the necessary paperwork was completed and returned but the news of his capture leaked out over the weekend. Promoter Simon Barton was hoping to hold back the announcement until the work permit was applied for and the club had all the required signed paperwork back, “Laurence had been working on this for a while and we had decided to wait to reveal the rider until this was done but we have been scooped by a daily paper which is a bit annoying.”

“As it is our talks with potential No. 1 Craig Watson, which we had also kept quiet, were also announced in the press, so a bit of the gloss has been taken away from the club by what has leaked out. We were initially going down a completely different route with our team building but circumstances altered those plans and we decided that we needed to build for the future and bring some new assets into the club. Hence we added young Dane Casper Wortmann to our original new signing Jan Graversen. Now we adding a rider that Laurence has had recommended to him by one of the greats of speedway Ivan Mauger in the New Zealand Under 21 Champion Grant Tregoning. The 19 year old is travelling from the other side of the world to join us and although we have already had the sceptics claiming we are taking a risk with three new riders, it is a calculated one that we believe will be for the long term future of the club.”

Team boss Rogers is upbeat at the side the club are putting together, “Having three newcomers is something I think our fans will like and realise where we are heading. I could have gone for tried and stayed riders and have the club pay out more loan fees but we decided that we are planning for the long term future of the club and by signing three young riders like this who will become assets of the club it is the right way to go. In terms of the club finances we have loaned out three riders in Jason King, Shaun Tacey and Chris Schramm but effectively replaced them with three new assets plus using Mark Baseby meaning that we have four assets and three loanees. This effectively balances the books from that perspective but long term we have three new young riders who will only get better.“

“I must thank Ivan for all his help with this as he has not only recommended Grant to us but has been helping with the negotiations, paperwork and arrangements. We are submitting his work permit application and naturally need this rubber stamping before he is officially a Fen Tiger. He hails from Christchurch – which has produced a good rider or two over the years!! – and took the Under 21 title in style from what we have been told. He is crating over one bike and his parents have helped him buy a new JAWA (JRM) which Ivan has arranged to be delivered from the factory in the Czech Republic at the beginning of March when Grant is due to fly in to take his place in the Mildenhall team. Ivan rates him and reports he is very keen and determined to do well – so that will do for me!! It will be a big adventure for the teenager coming half way round the world to ride in the UK and I know he can’t wait for March to come around. Like Casper and Jan we are looking for accommodation and workshop facilities for him as well as transport and anyone willing to offer help can contact me on 07801429304 or by e-mailing laurencerogers@blueyonder.co.uk.“

“Now it’s down to sort out our number one and if all goes according to plan we should be able to finalise this soon and complete the 2008 Fen Tigers line-up.”

FIVE DOWN TWO TO GO
By David Crane, Cambridge Evening News ~ Saturday 26th January 2008
Five down, two to go, but Fen Tigers supporters may need to wait a further week before they discover the identity of their sixth winter signing. With James Cockle, Mark Baseby and Robbie Kessler, plus Danish Under 21 pair Jan Graversen and Casper Wortmann already on board, Mildenhall look certain to finalise terms imminently with an Antipodean rider and resolve the destiny of top target Craig Watson.

Team manager Laurence Rogers said: “I’m very hopeful of securing a deal with this young rider from Down Under. He has a very good pedigree and comes recommended by an established and respected speedway personality. Some may say that we are taking another risk but I feel it is a risk worth taking to benefit the long term stability of the club. I have spoken to Craig a couple of times in the past week and he is due back in England by Monday so we can speed things up. The situation with his van sponsorship is still to be sorted. Should his signing not come to fruition, I do have another option that I have kept open. He is a strong rider who would lead the team well and I’m sure the fans would be pleasantly surprised.”

The club has reassured supporters that the departure of Carl Harris from the West Row stadium will have no adverse affects on the regular Sunday night racing that they have become accustomed to since 1975. Rogers said: “I have spoken a few times to James Waters at the stadium and he is very enthusiastic about the way we are moving forward and there shouldn’t be any great difference. It was a shock to lose Carl, no-one was expecting it and we are sorry to see him go as we enjoyed a good working relationship, but he is replaceable.”

With the Fen Tigers building a young, cosmopolitan outfit, Rogers is seeking local accommodation for some of his new recruits after securing workshops and transport. Anyone interested are advised to contact Rogers on 07801 429304 or email: laurencerogers@blueyonder.co.uk

THE WATERS FAMILY BACK WITH THE FEN TIGERS
By Mildenhall Speedway ~ Wednesday 23rd January 2008

Following the decision of Carl Harris to resign as the Commercial Director of Fen Tigers Limited the Mildenhall Fen Tigers are pleased to announce that they will be working with James Waters at Mildenhall Stadium to take Mildenhall Speedway forward. James’ father Terry Waters was instrumental in the building of Mildenhall Stadium and together with Bernie Klatt and Colin Barber brought League Speedway to West Row for the first time in 1975, James himself remembers his days as a mascot for the team.

Promoter Simon Barton remembers the success of the Fen Tigers as a child and wants to replicate those days with success both on and off the track. Simon Barton said “I am really looking forward to working with James and Terry as we look to continue to encourage the growth of crowds and cementing our future in the Premier League. James will bring a fresh approach to the stadium and our collaboration will hopefully bring benefits to both parties.” He added “The Waters family have been involved in Speedway right from the start and it is great to have them back in a more hands on role.”

With his increasing work-load Simon is hoping to introduce a Co-Promoter to the Fen Tigers team, someone with a knowledge of the sport and Commercial and Marketing experience to add to his own Financial background. It was hoped that Colin Barber a former Promoter would take on the role but with health doubts he has had to decline the post although as a shareholder of the Company he will act in an advisory capacity.

SPECIALIST KESSLER CAPTURED
By David Crane, Cambridge Evening News ~ Saturday 19th January 2008
Mildenhall team manager Laurence Rogers has hailed his capture of former World Cup finalist Robbie Kessler as a ‘steal’ for the club. The 34-year-old German International is the fifth addition to the Fen Tigers’ ranks ahead of the new Premier League campaign. Kessler is a proven West Row specialist having grabbed double figure scores on his two previous visits, giving him an average of almost 10 points.

Rogers said: “Robbie almost joined us 12 months ago but the deal fell through when I was hospitalised. I was determined to seal his signing this time and he is a steal for us on a 5.79 average. He is a solid performer and his record around Mildenhall speaks for itself. He is very keen to do well and help the younger lads in the team with his experience. We have a sponsorship team in place that has enabled him to purchase two new Jawa rolling chassis and have two brand new bikes for the season. I expect Robbie to put two points on his average and I’m sure his signing will be well received by the fans. Our team is starting to look formidable.”

Kessler, who will line up at No. 5, missed the remaining three months of last season after suffering an arm injury in a fall for Rye House. He joins on loan from Sheffield where he spent four years and he also enjoyed an equal successful period with Stoke. Kessler has represented his country six times, including the 2002 World Cup Final, and was twice the nation’s Under 21 Champion, as well as finishing three times on the rostrum in the German Final.

Rogers has ruled out interest in former favourite Jon Armstrong. He said: “Jon had a serious injury after breaking two bones in his back last year and his fitness could not be proven for us to consider him. His average of above six points was also a stumbling block.”

Mildenhall have postponed today’s (Saturday) training school practice and quad bike meeting, sponsored by Wellbourne Recoveries of Wisbech, due to adverse track conditions. It is rearranged for February 2.

CASPER FEN TIGERS NEW GHOST
By David Crane, Cambridge Evening News ~ Friday 18th January 2008
Mildenhall have secured their fourth signing for the season with the addition of Danish teenager Casper Wortmann, who also becomes a club asset. The 19-year-old spent last year riding in three countries - Denmark, Sweden and Poland, and impressed the Fen Tigers management in a couple of individual meetings at the back end of last year as he looked to secure himself a contract in the UK.

Wortmann said: “I’m really happy to be joining Mildenhall and can’t wait to show the supporters what I can do. I’m looking forward to riding the West Row track and am sure it will be a great year for the club.” He will partner fellow countryman Jan Graversen in the team and Tigers team manager Laurence Rogers believes the side’s structure will go down well with fans. He said: “Casper rode in the Wolverhamption Olympique and Redcar Silver Helmet meetings and he impressed me with good equipment and stylish racing. We’re looking at the long term by building our assets, widening our contacts worldwide and we’ll continue to do that for several seasons."

“He has a lot of potential and both Jan and Casper, who are part of the Denmark Under 21 set up, come from a country that has a proven pedigree of producing world stars. We are likely to have some spare points after completing the team and I believe we will have a team that our fans will be happy with. I’m looking forward to working with our three teenage assets and bringing them on further.”

The club are unlikely to be using the conventional method of three heat leaders and two second string riders to fill out their top five, with Rogers admitting they have gone down a different route of team building. Mildenhall fans will need to continue to wait on the destiny of their top target Craig Watson, who is still organising transport sponsorship before making his decision. But Rogers confirmed the club are set to make a fifth addition to the team this weekend.

WEST ROW SPECIALIST JOINS FEN TIGERS
By Mildenhall Speedway ~ Friday 18th January 2008

Mildenhall have added West Row specialist Robbie Kessler to their 2008 side and the former German Champion is determined to put a troubled 2007 behind him to help the Fen Tigers to success. The Sheffield asset was surprisingly axed by Stoke after just five matches when the Potters restructured their side. He moved on to Redcar as a temporary replacement for the injured Matt Tresarrieu riding in seven meetings for the Bears averaging 8.36 for them before the Frenchman returned to action. His next move was to come in at Rye House to replace Ray Morton who had been brought in for the injured Stuart Robson. He lasted nine matches before being injured and missed the rest of the season.

Now fully fit and having tested himself rigorously by moto-crossing, he is really looking forward to riding for Mildenhall. Speaking from Germany, where he is having a brief family holiday he said, “I love the Mildenhall track and I am really looking forward to joining the Fen Tigers. I have two new bikes lined up to use and must thank a group of fans and sponsors at Mildenhall who have helped back with me two new Jawa rolling chassis.”

“The club are organising rider support teams to help all the riders and this group have already started this off with this backing which I am very grateful for. They are now recruiting more backers to cover my costs for my tyres, fuel, oil, insurance and points backing. That is just superb. I have no real sponsors at the moment so this is a big boost for me and I aim to repay them with as many points as I can score for the team. I can’t wait for the season to start and with some new youngsters in I will be doing all I can to help them.”

Kessler’s record at West Row is certainly impressive and he is averaging just under 10 points a meeting from his two previous performances. His first appearance at Stoke saw him hit 15 points and last year in Redcar colours he notched paid 14.

Team boss Laurence Rogers sees his capture on such a low average of 5.79 as a snip, “To have signed someone who has ridden so well previously at our track on such a low figure is a big bonus. He had a mixed year last season but he is determined to put all that behind him. His experience will be something I will be drawing upon to help our young new riders and I am really pleased to have landed his signature – but I must thank the fans and sponsors who have added their support to help bring him to the club. For all the riders we will be looking for help and support from as many people as want to be involved and I think the Rider Support Teams will prove successful.”

“With Robbie now in place we have two spots to fill and still have 15.03 remaining to use and I hope that we will be in apposition to announce those two riders sooner rather than later. If all goes according to plan and we get the paperwork back signed and sealed we will be revealing another new rider who will become an asset of the club whilst we are awaiting news from Craig Watson over his decision of where he will line-up in 2008 – with fingers crossed that it will be Mildenhall.”

FEN TIGERS SIGN SECOND YOUNG DANE FOR 2008 SEASON
By Mildenhall Speedway ~ Wednesday 16th January 2008

The Mildenhall Fen Tigers have made an second capture to add to their asset base from Denmark with 19 year old Casper Wortmann signing on the dotted line. He joins fellow countryman Jan Graversen in the new look Fen Tigers line-up for 2008 and looks likely to be lining up in all Danish team partnership in the side. The teenager made a brief visit to the UK last year getting rides at several tracks and is a close friend of Peterborough skipper Hans Andersen. The youngster was watched at one of those after meeting spins by Mildenhall team boss Laurence Rogers , who made a mental note of the rider, “ I remember standing talking to Hans Andersen about the lad in the Wolverhampton pits and noticing that he had good equipment and he looked stylish out on track. When we were looking at our options for a team place he was on my lists but credit to the lad in that he pushed himself into contention by contacting us.”

“I did a bit of homework on him calling Danish team boss Jan Staechmann amongst other to find out a bit more about him and was suitably impressed. After talking to him a deal was agreed very quickly and his signed contract was returned immediately. He is ultra keen to ride in the UK and will be giving up a Polish League spot he had lined up to ride for Mildenhall. He hails from Odense and rode in three leagues last year for Fjelsted in Denmark, Lejonen in Sweden and Rawicz in Poland. He becomes an asset of the club which is good for the future which we are now building for. His keenness to ride for us and the background I found out got him his team spot ahead of several others we were considering and talking to.”

“Fans wanting to view his website – which is in Danish!! – can log into www.team-wortmann.dk. We are trying now to sort out accommodation and workshop facilities for him and he is looking for a sponsor to provide him with a van in the UK so that he can leave his Danish van at home to use for his Danish and Swedish fixtures and anyone who might be able to help can contact me by e-mail at : laurencerogers@blueyonder.co.uk or by mobile on 07801429304. It is another exciting capture for the club that we will be following up with the announcement of another youngster as a new asset for the Fen Tigers as we start to build for the future. I am quite excited about the way we are structuring the side and fans can look forward seeing some of these young lads develop over the season.”

FEN TIGERS CLOSE TO ANNOUNCING SIDE FOR 2008 SEASON – exciting Cosmopolitan outfit.
By Mildenhall Speedway ~ Tuesday 15th January 2008

After weeks of wait and patience, despite the worry of some fans over the 2008 side that the Fen Tigers would track, Mildenhall look like announcing the remainder of their team for the new season in almost one fell swoop. Until the ink is dry on the contracts though they will not be releasing any names having been caught out this winter by circumstance that has seen assets Shaun Tacey and Jason King move on to King’s Lynn and Newcastle. There has been much press and internet speculation over the number one rider the club are after but the identity of the rider in question was leaked in a Daily newspaper and the Speedway Star last week. Top Australian rider Craig Watson was revealed as the target of the Fen Tigers and the club await confirmation from the former Newport, Poole and Glasgow rider that he will be joining them for the 2008 season to spearhead the side.

The Poole asset, who was lined up for an Elite League place with his parent club until an average problem lost him that chance, is currently on holiday in his native country. He is awaiting confirmation from one of his sponsors about being supplied with a van before making his final decision on where he will ride in 2008 having had, at least one, if not more offers from Premier League clubs. Fen Tigers Team Manager Laurence Rogers, who has been a very busy person this close season sorting out the team, is hoping that the 31 year old from Sydney will plump for the Fen Tigers, “I spoke at length with Craig on New Year’s Eve when the news that he was unable to be used by Poole came to my notice. I immediately spoke with Matt Ford, the Poole promoter for permission to talk to Watto before calling him. I made him an offer there and then which was acceptable to him after we discussed it further.”

“Thanks to some superb Mildenhall sponsors who have offered help to the club I was able to match what Craig was asking for in his deal. We met briefly at the New Year Classic meeting at Newport and he called me just before he boarded the plane with his family to fly home. The one thing he needed to get sorted was his van sponsorship and I spoke with well known sponsor Mike Spearpoint, who is a close friend of mine, who is looking at backing him with a vehicle. It was then down to Watto to decide which club he was signing for. I am now just awaiting a call off him to see if he will be leading the Fen Tigers in 2008. I was not going to name him until all was signed and sealed but the newspaper articles took this anonymous identity of the rider involved away. I am just hopeful that we are his choice. If not I will recommence talks with other riders who fit the bill. We just have to be patient.”

“What I will reveal though is that I have agreed deals with three other riders to join us in 2008 and just await the return of their signed paperwork before announcing them. From the club’s point of view it strengthens the asset base as we are bringing in two more new riders as we re-build the club for the future and there are exciting times ahead. I will not say any more yet but I am excited by the cosmopolitan side we have lined up with some exciting new young talent backed up by a solid seasoned rider who will be coming on loan to us who has a superb record at West Row and who I believe is a steal on is average especially at Mildenhall – ut more on that later when the ink is dry on those contracts!!”

One exciting development that fans and local businesses can be involved with this season is helping to back any of the riders in a variety of ways by becoming one of their support teams. Each rider will have a support team which will help back the tyres, fuel, oil, insurance cost, pounds or pence per point scored for each rider. Social and fund raising events will be held to boost the levels each rider can be supported by. Team boss Laurence Rogers is excited about his scheme to help the team, “The riders all think it’s a great idea and the sponsors who have already pledged support believe it will be well supported. A fan can back any rider they like for as much as they can afford to help with their running costs whether that be for their tyres, fuel, oil, insurance, pounds per point or whatever.”

“It has been suggested that I hold a sponsor meeting to launch it soon so that the various support teams can be formalised and fund raising can begin. I have spoken to several people so far. some of whom have already committed towards backing certain riders and I am sure many others will join in. I will announce the date for this sponsor/support team launch as soon as I can. Additionally fans or small businesses can also sponsor a rider’s body colour this year with their name or business appearing on the back of the race bib. Each sponsor will receive a signed duplicate of the bib from their sponsored rider and this will cost £100 per rider and I already have a few sold!! Interested parties can contact me by e-mail at: laurencerogers@blueyonder.co.uk or by mobile on 07801429304.”

AUSSIE TO DECIDE THIS WEEKEND
By David Crane, Cambridge Evening News ~ Saturday 12th January 2008
Australian international Craig Watson will decide over the next 48 hours whether to join Mildenhall who have made him their number one target. The 31-year-old from Sydney has returned to his home country to mull over his destiny for next season after being offered deals from Berwick and the Fen Tigers. The former Elite League rider only recently came back onto the market after a return to Poole fell through due to confusion over his average, and the Tigers swiftly swooped in with their interest.

Team manager Laurence Rogers explained: “When Craig became available, I was immediately on the ‘phone to Matt Ford (Poole promoter) and I quickly began talks with Craig. He is waiting for his sponsor to arrange a van for him and once that is sorted, he will make a straight choice between us and Berwick this weekend. He has already said that our terms are acceptable and it is just a case of waiting patiently for his answer. If the signing comes off, it will make a lot of people sit up and take notice of us. Craig would bring a lot of experience and points to the team, and I feel could be an excellent captain.”

Mildenhall supporters will be keeping their fingers crossed that the news is positive as Watson’s acquisition would give the side the same powerful spearhead which fellow Australian Jason Lyons gave two years ago. Watson proved his credentials around West Row by scoring 16 points last season with Glasgow, including five race wins. But while his signing looks promising, hopes of securing the second targeted heat leader have fallen through.

Rogers said: “We’ve had a knock on the rider we were talking with. He has lost his main mechanic and sponsorship hasn’t been forthcoming which means he cannot ride in the UK and abroad. It’s a great shame as he was happy with the terms we offered. He was recommended to us by Kyle Legault and had only previously ridden in the Elite League. I feel he would have made a good impact in the Premier League.”

RIDER MAKES TRACKS TO SPEEDWAY FANS
By Ely Weekly News ~ Monday 7th January 2008

Keen speedway fans had the thrills of the track come to them when they were visited by a star rider. The Larkfields Centre in Ely, a day centre for adults with learning disabilities, has an enthusiastic speedway fan club. And they had a special guest in James Cockle, a rider with Mildenhall Fen Tigers who lives in March.

The club was started by Tina Slattery, a support worker at Larkfields who is also a flag marshal at Mildenhall Speedway. She said; "Not everyone can go to the track, so it's nice to have riders come into the centre. They can see the bikes and ask questions."

Members of the club, aged from 19 up to 60, watch DVDs of races together and follow the fortunes of the Fen Tigers closely. Mrs Slattery said; "If riders get injured, they have shown concern and sent good luck messages."

The Larkfields speedway club hopes to welcome more riders before the start of the season in March. The centre is run by the Cambridge Learning Disability partnership, of which Cambridgeshire County Council is a part.

FEN TIGERS HOME IN ON KEY TARGETS
By David Crane, Cambridge Evening News ~ Saturday 5th January 2008
Mildenhall are closing in on capturing their two heat leader stars for next season and could be in a position to announce their signings this weekend. Team manager Laurence Rogers is keeping their identities under wraps, but has revealed he is in advanced stages of negotiation with two riders to spearhead the Fen Tigers. Rogers was recommended one of the riders by last season’s Canadian star Kyle Legault, who has joined Birmingham, and believes their captures would delight supporters.

Two further names that are out of the equation are former GB internationals Andy Smith and Paul Thorp, both of whom have been linked to West Row as they search for a team berth.
Rogers said: “I have spoken to both Andy and Paul and discussed the possibilities of them joining Mildenhall. Andy will still not be fit at the start of the season after suffering a knee injury last year but would have been a good potential heat leader. I have known Paul since he started out in the sport, but he is looking for a team spot near his home in Cheshire which rules him out. Both riders have excellent pedigrees - Andy has been in the Grand Prix series and Paul was a top international rider. This shows the calibre of riders we are considering and we are covering so many avenues."

“There are a lot of riders that are still available and despite working to a budget that will not bankrupt the club, we are in the market for some good riders. Should we complete the signings of the two heat leaders, it will make things easier in building the rest of the team with a fair amount of points left to use.”

Mildenhall have fallen behind in the close season team building race with only three riders confirmed to-date. The club has 10 weeks until their third Premier League campaign begins, but will be keen to reassure supporters who saw their line-up for last season completed by mid-January.
